Robe shines up Starlight Express in Johannesburg

Robe moving lights were used as part of an intricate lighting design for the epic rollerskating Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Starlight Express, staged at the Mandela at the Joburg Theatre Complex, South Africa.

The lighting design was designed to be big, bold and spectacular for the large scale production.

In total there were over 600 lights. In the overhead lighting rig were 18 Robe Robin MMX Spots and 18 Robe ColourWash 700E ATs.

The majority of the fixtures, which also included other moving lights, generic and LED fixtures, had to be rigged due to the construction of the set design.

Individual side light positions used 12 Robe ColourSpot 700E ATs and 18 Robe LEDWash 600s. These high side positions ensured that they could be kept out of the rollerskating performers’ eyes.
